The images below represent some of the
World Design, Level Design, and World Building work that I did on Richard Garriot's Tabula Rasa. I created 5 of the
15 shared "overland" maps in the game, plus 6 instance maps, from initial paper design to finished product. More specifically:
- I wrote the world design documents and developed the initial fictional bases/frameworks
- I planned the layouts for game-play, flow, and pacing
- I acted as a consultant for the art team during concept phases
- I produced my own concepts when needed, with Art Director approvals
- I built the heightmaps using a proprietary terrain editor
- I painted textures over the entire terrain
- I placed all props, flora, and structures
- I created models for features, props, and structures, when necessary
- I set up lighting, music, and ambient sound changes for different locales
- I placed omni, spot, and plane lights and configured all light properties
- I placed 3d sound effects
- I optimized the maps for performance
- I set up and exported user outputs for in-game maps and UI elements
- I set up map teleporters, hospitals, waypoints, and other various mechanical components
- I collaborated on mission ideas
- I set up supplementary spawners, patrols, encounters, and interactions |
